Weather in Namibia

Namibia's cool nights and hot days are typical semi-desert climate. The coastal areas enjoy cooler weather, with fog and little rainfall due to the cooling effects of the Benguela current. Temperatures in the more elevated central plateau of Namibia are naturally lower. Find out the latest temperatures in Namibia with our six-day Namibia weather forecast below.

On an average, Namibia enjoys 300 sunny days per year. There is no rainfall as such, except for heavy thunderstorms during the summer from November to February. At this time, the riverbeds, which are usually dry, fill up quickly with muddy torrents of water. In the interior, there are two rainy seasons: the short season with its frequent thunderstorms between October and December, and the longer season from the middle of January to April.

The summer season lasts from October to April. The mercury at this time can shoot up to 40º C, plunging to cooler temperatures at night. Daily temperatures in Namibia on average range from 20 to 34º C. During the winter from May to September, the days are wonderfully warm but the nights are very cold, often below freezing.

Best Time to Visit Namibia

May to September is the ideal time to visit the Namib Desert. During these months, the temperatures are cooler. However, it can get cold at night. If you’d like to visit the seaside resort of Swakopmund, which is a popular tourist attraction, especially at Christmas and Easter, make sure to book in advance. Or go there at another time when it is not as crowded. Due to high temperatures from November to mid- March, some camps in the Fish River Canyon may close down.
